Picasso once said "Inspiration exists, but it needs to find you working".

In other words, inspiration doesn’t just happen. You gotta work for it.

And we’d add one more thing to that – namely, inspiration also requires searching. You’re not likely to get inspired if you spend the whole day sitting on your couch watching episodes of Game of Thrones. Sorry.

Instead, you’ve gotta go out and look for it…because inspiration is found out there in the real world.

And our very favourite place to shop and find inspiration for new collections is in Tokyo.

Why?

Japan in general is known for valuing aesthetics. The country has a history of beautiful and ornate clothing dating back hundreds of years to the time of the Samurai and more recently, the Geisha.

Nowadays, you’re more likely to find crazy Japanese hipsters wandering around the streets of Tokyo or Osaka. And truth be told, their outfits are some of the craziest we’ve ever seen. It’s almost as if the ‘give-a-fuck’ level is so ridiculously low, that people simply wear whatever they like.

No fear. No rules. No fucks given.

And that’s why Tokyo is our favorite – because anything goes. In that sense, it’s not even about the shops or stores themselves; it’s about the attitude.

And that’s actually pretty strange, considering how formal, hierarchical and sometimes conservative Japanese culture is.

But if there’s anything we’ve learned from being in Japan, it’s that the culture – on the surface – is very formal and etiquette-oriented. But below the surface, it’s seriously eccentric and weird – in a great way. Maybe that’s why Japan produces so much weird porn…

Truth be told, we wouldn’t personally wear a lot of the outfits we’ve seen in Tokyo.

But the fact that they even exist is really inspirational. And that's what makes Tokyo our favorite place to shop and get inspiration.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not even about the shops – it’s about the people. And it takes a ton of courage and self-confidence to wear something out-of-the-ordinary…and we admire those who actually do it.

…so that’s why we seek them out.
