A really great hotel will probably make you feel like shit about your own home.

And that was exactly the case on a recent trip to the busy and sprawling metropolis of Shanghai, where we stayed at the Puli Hotel in the Jing’an area of the city. Upon stepping in to the hotel for the first time, we were immediately met with a thought that went a little something like this:

'We wish our apartments back in Germany looked like this...'

But that’s just the price to pay for liking nice things, we guess.

Thankfully, such thoughts were quickly forgotten as we made our way in to the main lobby and checked in. Now, the actually name of the hotel is ‘The Puli Hotel & Spa’, which is funny because the lobby itself looked like and felt like the spa. Relaxing music. The scent of lemongrass in the air. Minimalist decor. Soft lighting. I felt as though I’d achieved a new level of zen just by standing there for three minutes.

Resisting the urge to fall asleep standing up, we made our way upstairs to our rooms – which were, as expected by this point, absolutely fantastic. The thing is, most hotels are simply too complicated – it’s impossible to find the plug. There’s too much furniture. It just doesn’t seem to be laid out right.

But our rooms at the Puli were just right. It had everything it needed, and nothing more. Simplicity at its finest, without feeling sterile like the surgery room at the emergency section of your local hospital.

After getting settled in our rooms, we then went down to the restaurant for a bite to eat – because it’s amazing how hungry you get on a 12 hour flight spent watching all three Lord of the Rings movies back to back to back.

So to our delight, the hotel restaurant was pretty spectacular in its own right.

All in all, we absolutely loved our stay at the Puli in Shanghai, and we’d highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city. Aside for the beautiful and thoughtfully put-together design and decor, the hotel also has a lot more to offer beyond aesthetics. Namely, great service. Exceptionally friendly staff. Fantastic location. And last but certainly not least, incredible food. Hell, we’d even stay there JUST for the Sunday brunch buffet.

Ultimately, we found the Puli to be the perfect balance of style and substance.

Oh wait – did we mention THE POOL?!
