Sam Feldt - Amsterdam, Netherlands

Sam’s been a friend of ours for a long time. As a matter of fact, he’s been there since day one – just as we started this crazy adventure. During that time, we’ve been blessed to see him grow in to one of the biggest names in EDM. But through it all, it’s amazing how little has changed about Sam himself, as he remains one of the most humble and carefree guys we know. So we caught up with him in his adopted home of Amsterdam to ask him the question – who are you? Here’s what he had to say…

I grew up in Boxtel, which is a small town in the southern part of the Netherlands. I come from a very musical family, with my dad being a guitar player / composer and my mom just being a genuine lover of music.

I’ve always loved entertaining other people and at the age of 11 I already had my own drive-in show playing music at my friends’ birthday parties. I started creating music at around the same time and took piano lessons for about 7 years. Then at the age of 17, it all came together and I started to take this whole DJ/Producer thing seriously. It still took around 5 more years before it really took off, but I would#t want to do anything else.

The very best part is the moment you step on stage. It’s an adrenaline rush you just can’t describe.

I think the people who know me know that I’m doing what I love and that I’m a very, very happy man.

I get inspiration from so many different things. It could be from a movie, playing video games, a melody in a song from a different genre. It’s that comes and goes…you can’t really control it.

There a lot of people in my life who have really impacted me. From the moment I was born, there have been many people who’ve helped to get me to where I am right now. From my parents allowing me the freedom to create, to the people at Spinnin’ Records (my record label), there are a lot of people to thank.

The event in my life that’s impacted me the most was the moment I signed my first record deal. It not allowed me to reach many more people through music, and it also gave me the confidence to believe in myself – it was the confirmation that I could really make a living from music.

Amsterdam is special to me. I fell in love with it and even though I’m always traveling around the world, I can never wait to go back.

Don’t make stuff because you think other people will like it. Make the stuff you like and I guarantee that other people will like it too.

I think my biggest strength lies in the way I combine creativity with business acumen. On that note, I recently founded a new start-up called Fangage that builds portals for fans and artists.

What would my last meal be? Whatever I’m in the mood for…

I admit I can’t live without my IPhone for more than a couple minutes.

To me, personal style is about making your appearance match the way you feel about yourself.

Black.

I want to be remembered as someone who brought joy through music. Plain and simple.
